Beneath The Night Sky

Today we reached the end of the second part of our ongoing project with Guildford Action. We have been working with a group of homeless people with the aim of producing a play for an invited audience. Our band of committed actors devised the play 'Beneath The Night Sky' and performed it on the stage of the Electric Theatre, Guildford. We were so proud of the cast who showed real passion and commitment even though they had never attempted anything like this before. Huge thanks must be given to Debbie Hayter for giving this project a home at the Guildford Community Centre, Susie Jones at Guildford Action and Su Kelland, Arts Development Officer at Guildford Borough Council who funded this project with help from the Poyle Foundation. Not forgetting Sue Barnard and the amazing team at the Electric Theatre for their continued unflagging support in all our endeavours. Watch this space for news of the next part of this exciting project...

some reflections

Before bringing you up to date with all our news for 2011, it's worth reflecting on what a satisfying year 2010 was for Powerhouse! Our latest history play 'Our Tudors' played the Spring and Autumn seasons at the Electric Theatre to very enthusiastic, largely school audiences and also toured to schools throughout Surrey too. This was the third in the Our History series and we plan to do more in 2012. Powerhouse also performed 'Phantasmagoria' an outdoor show at the Loseley Arts Festival, the show featuring professional actors and students from three Guildford schools. Powerhouse director and founder Geoff Lawson also toured extensively to venues across Surrey and Hampshire with CBBC presenter Katy Ashworth in the Powerhouse show 'Little Sparks', this culminated in two sell out Family Festival finale shows that were met with great acclaim. The year was brought to a close by our christmas show 'The Mouse In Santas House' which played to sell out audiences throughout the christmas period.

So far in 2012 we have established a new 'Storytelling Club' for pre school children, currently engaged in the second run of a drama project wiith homeless people; the first run went extremely well and we're hopeful of putting together a performance that we will do at the Electric Theatre at end of June. In March of this year, at the request of Guildford International Music Festival, we did a show about the life of Lewis Carroll entitled 'Mr Carroll Invites' in the castle grounds in central Guildford. The show involved professional actors, youth theatre kids and the wonderful Guildford Vox Choir, the weather held and everyone performed out of their skins to produce a magical theatrical experience that will live long in the memory!

We are currently speaking to theatres and arts venues across Surrey and London, as we are putting together a tour of 'Pretty Ugly' the award winning play we did in 2007. The play tells the true life story of someone who developed the eating disorder anorexia, became hospitalised, but ultimately got better. We've wanted to bring this show back for quite some time and we're pleased we'll get the opportunity to do so in February 2012.
